No Paint DIY Road Blocks

Does the idea of a DIY project scare you? This one won’t. A lot of people associate the term DIY with needing tools, and that’s not always the case. To make these DIY Road Blocks you’re not going to need anything more complicated than a pair of scissors.

I first came across the idea for DIY Road Blocks from Little Lifelong Learners. As you can imagine, I loved it. I went out and made some that very week. When I made ours, I used outdoor paint because I knew that they were going to live in the garden. They work perfectly out there and have made a wonderful addition to our sandpit play.

The only problem I have with the roadblocks from Little Lifelong Learners is that they are bulky and difficult to store. This is another reason why I make them live outside all the time. But since my kids love cars I wanted them to be able to build their small world cities inside too. I finally got the idea for these DIY No Paint Road Blocks when I found a spare piece of thick black cardboard hiding behind a bookcase.

How to Make DIY Road Blocks

Step 1: Measure up the cardboard. My cardboard was black on one side and white on the other. This made measuring up very easy and gave my kids something to draw on while I worked.

You can make the blocks any size and shape you want. If I was more talented (or patient) then I would have even tried to make ones that curve. However, just some simple rectangles work perfectly, and they are much easier to store than road blocks that are different shapes.

Step 2: Cut out your cardboard. You’ll need some scissors or a Stanley Knife for this step, depending on how thick your cardboard is. If your little ones like to “help”, then I recommend doing this step during naptime like I did.

Step 3: Use the roll-on white out to create lines down the middle of your road blocks. I experimented with both dotted and solid lines. However, I prefer the dotted line blocks since they are unmistakably a road.
