If you love doing process art with your children, here are some more fun and easy ideas that are suitable for toddlers and preschoolers.

Materials Needed

You probably already have everything you need for this activity at home already. All you need is:

  • Colored chalk
  • Paper (white or black)
  • A hammer
  • A bowl of water (this is key)

How to Make a Hammer Painting

Step 1. Break the chalk into small pieces, about ¼ inch in length.

2. Soak the pieces in a bowl of water. This will make the chalk soft and easier to break apart when hammered.

3. Place the pieces of chalk on the piece of paper.

Let the kids place the chalk  one by one or all together, whatever they feel like doing.

You can do this activity using either black or white paper, I personally  prefer using black paper because it helps the colors to really shine. But if all you have is white, then don’t fret, it’ll still be a lot of fun.

4. Use a hammer to smash the chalk into the paper.

The chalk will spread over the paper, and the colors will mix a bit depending on how enthusiastically the kids hammer.

I used a toy hammer with my kids because they were still so young. If you are doing this art idea with older kids that you trust, you can always let them use a real hammer.
