How to Make the Insect Gross Motor Dice

1. Download and print the digital pdf.

To get your copy of the printable movement dice, just head to the bottom of the page and follow the instructions.

2. Cut out the dice template.

Make sure that you don’t cut off the small tabs on the side of some of the pictures. You’ll need these to assemble your dice in the next step.

3. Fold along the lines and glue the sides together.

4. Place a small foam block in the middle of the dice.

This is optional. I like to place these foam blocks inside the dice to give it some extra stability. However there are a few different things you can do to make your dice more sturdy. You can:

  1. Fill the middle with toilet rolls cut to size.
  2. Fill the middle with scrunched up paper.
  3. Use a ready made activity dice set. (If you’re a teacher then I highly recommend this option because you can change out the pictures and use the same dice again and again.)

5. Glue the top of your dice down.

How to Play

1. Throw the animal movement activity dice and observe which side is facing upwards.

2. Mimic the animal on the top of the printable dice.

For example, if a bee is facing upwards, then you need to fly like a bee.

Different Challenges to try

There are a few different ways you can play, the best way will depend on how old your kids are and what they find engaging.

  1. Set a timer. 30 seconds or 1 minute for each turn. For example, “Can you slide like a snail for 30 seconds?”
  2. Set a distance. Pick two spots and go between them for each turn. For example, “Can you fly like a bee from the kitchen table to the front door?”
  3. Set a number. This would probably be easier for smaller children. 5 – 10 of the animal movement for each turn. For example “Can you jump like a grasshopper 5 times?”

Whichever way works for you, have fun doing it.
