How to Make a Paper Plate Brachiosaurus Craft

Step 1: Draw the outline of the body of the dinosaur onto the paper plate with a sharpie or black pen.

The long neck and tail will curl up and follow the curve of the plate.

Draw a face onto the head of the dinosaur. I like to include a little smile and small circles for the eyes. If you’re drawing these on with a black marker, then you don’t have to worry about painting over them, as you can still see the details through the paint. Alternatively, you can always stick googly eyes onto your finished brachiosaurus with white glue.

2. Paint your dinosaur and wooden clothespins.

Let your children decorate their dinosaur however they like. I chose one color of poster paint for the body and feet, then used a cotton ball to place dots of a different color over the back, neck and long tail.

The clothespins will become the dinosaur’s short legs once everything has dried.

3. When the paint has dried, cut out your dinosaur shape.

I paint the plate before cutting, because I find it easier for the kids. The intact plate is more sturdy for drying, and it also gives the kids more space to actually paint on.

Practicing cutting with scissors is a fantastic way to help kids strengthen fine motor skills. However, if you’re doing this fun activity with a classroom filled with toddlers, you may prefer to do this step yourself.

4. Peg the two clothespins onto the bottom of the paper plate body to make some legs.

This was a very easy craft to set up. If you already have everything you need then it’ll only take 5 minutes to bring out the paint and draw the dinosaur outline.

My kids loved running around making their dinosaurs roar at each other. Or trying to get the dinosaur to stand up. It was a good balancing challenge for them.
