Materials Needed

How do you keep messy sensory bins mess-free? I do them in the garden because it makes cleaning up so easy. If you like the idea of keeping the mess out of your house then make sure that you always use Biocompatible Dish Soap. That way you know that it won’t hurt your plants when you wash up.

How to Make Soap Foam for your Witches Brew

There are a few different ways to make soap foam and you’ll have to experiment to see which one works for you.

Method 1: Add your soap, food coloring, and water into a blender and turn it on.

If this doesn’t create lovely bubbles it may be because your water is too hard or too soft. Try using bottled water instead.

If you don’t have a blender, then try a rotary egg beater instead.

Method 2: Use a tear-free bubble bath instead of dish soap.

This is particularly useful if you are worried about the foam getting into your child’s eyes. Most kids can get messy everywhere, if your child is like that then you don’t want to risk them getting hurt.

Method 3: I call this the frustrated mom wash.

I have to admit that the blender option doesn’t work for me. I haven’t tried bottled water myself because I discovered the third option instead.

When I got frustrated at the lack of gorgeous bubbles I gave up and just decided to wash out my blender. Guess what happened? All that soap left a whole heap of gorgeous bubbles in my sink. So I just scooped them up and put them in the cauldron.

I added the green food coloring afterward to turn it green and it worked perfectly. So if the traditional blender method doesn’t work for you, don’t worry. Sometimes a tap and a sink work better in the moments we need it.

How to Make a Magical Witches Potion Sensory Bin

Learn how to make a witches potion sensory bin. This Halloween play idea is perfect for toddlers, preschoolers and kindergartners who want to create something magical.

Step 1. Scoop your soap foam into your witches cauldron.

2. Arrange your loose parts and sensory bin tools.

3. Enjoy playing.

How did this sensory bin go after the bubble fiasco? Brilliantly.

My kids loved putting all the toys into the cauldron to make a witches potion. When they had run out of toys they also decided to get some leaves, mulch, and sand to add to their potion too.

They did end up fighting over the cauldron, so if you have more than one child, I recommend getting them some mini cauldrons. That way they can make their own potions without any fights.

Different ideas to try

Additional Prop Ideas

Experiment with different Halloween props to add into your magic potion. You’ll be sure to find a variety of different toys at your local dollar store. Halloween themed items to try include:

  • Plastic bones
  • Water beads
  • Artificial spider web
  • Little pumpkins
  • Googly eyes
  • Spider rings

If you’re doing this sensory activity with babies or young toddlers, be careful that the items you choose don’t pose a choking hazard. As always, ensure you supervise your children at all times.

Different sensory bin fillers to try

If you’re not a fan of soap foam, you can also change the sensory bin filler you use. The easiest idea is to just use a bit of water mixed in with some Halloween colors. Try a bit of purple food coloring, or orange coloring to make some halloween water play instead.

Another filler I love is purple rice. I particularly love this filler because you can pack it away and use it again another day. The best part is that this means that you only need to prepare this activity once and your kids can have hours of fun doing it again and again.

Finally, make a witch’s brew as a science experiment. Mixing vinegar and baking soda together creates a fun chemical reaction that results in a whole lot of bubbles. This is fantastic fun for preschoolers and kindergarteners.

No matter which way you make this easy Halloween sensory bin, your kids are going to have loads of fun.
