How to Make a Popsicle Stick Airplane Craft for Kids

Use craft sticks and a bit of paint to make this cute Popsicle Stick Airplane Craft. This is a great project for younger and older kids who love to be creative and are exploring a transport theme.

Adult supervision is required for all activities at all times. Some of the links provided in this blog are affiliate links. I will be paid a commission if you use this link to make a purchase.

  1. Wooden clothespin
  2. 2 Popsicle sticks
  3. 1 mini popsicle stick
  4. Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  5. Paint or paint pens
  6. Paint brush

The order of the steps can be changed depending on what works for you. In these step by step instructions, I first make the clothespin airplanes and then paint them. However, you can also paint all of the individual pieces first and then glue them together afterwards.

If you want to make the body of the plane one color, and the wings a different color (like in the first picture of this tutorial) then I recommend painting first and then gluing second.

1. Attach the top wing.

Use your hot glue gun to attach the middle of the large sticks to the clothespin. These will be the plane’s wings, so make sure that they are somewhere in the middle of your craft stick airplanes.

You can also use regular white glue for this project, however it will take longer to dry between steps.

2. Attach the bottom wing.

Turn the clothespin over and glue the other large pop stick to the clothes pin. You’ll want the wings to be the same distance away from the nose of the plane.

That way it looks like the double winged Wright Flyer that the Wright brothers originally flew in 1903.

3. Attach the tail.

You can either use a mini popsicle stick for the tail, or do what I did and just cut a regular sized one in half.

Glue it onto the top of the end of the clothespin.

4. Paint the airplane.

To make painting the plane easier, I clipped the clothespin onto the end of another popsicle stick. That way you can just hold the stick and don’t have to worry about getting your hands dirty.

I also used my set of paint pens to add on some extra details to the plane. I love paint pens and find that I use them for almost all of the fun ideas I have when crafting with my kids.

5. Enjoy playing.

Once you’ve let everything dry you can now play with your planes.

I used mine in this simple airplane sensory bin, which is perfect for young children who love to play.

Are you going to make this popsicle stick airplane craft with your kids? Don’t forget to pin the idea for later.
