Step 1: Break up the chalk into small pieces.

I used a grater that I use for kids arts and crafts. However, you can also place the chalk in a plastic bag and smash it with a hammer until the chalk becomes a fine powder.

2. Place each of the colors in a different bowl, or a muffin tin, then add a little bit of water and give it a good stir.

Add a little water at a time until you get the consistency you want (usually the consistency of poster paints). If your homemade sidewalk chalk paint becomes too fluid, you can always add some corn starch to help thicken it up a bit.

3. Grab some paint brushes and start this fun summer activity.

Yes, DIY chalk paint for kids washes off with water. All you need is a garden hose or a bit of rain to wash away your art work. You’ll find that over time, the paint will have more vibrant colors as it dries. But even once dried it will wash off easily.

There are several different recipes for homemade chalk paint. Most of which use common household ingredients. You can make regular sidewalk chalk paint for hours of fun, or spice it up and make puffy sidewalk paint. (Just add dish soap and flour to make your outdoor chalk paint puffy).

DIY chalk paint can last for a long time, if not forever. If you are making a large batch of sidewalk chalk paint then you can store it in airtight containers, to be used again throughout the summer. While it may dry out over time, all you need to do is grab a cup of water and fill it up again.
