8 Easy Black Glue Christmas Crafts for Kids
Table of Contents
Materials Needed
- Watercolor paper
- Watercolor paints
- Black glue*
*You can very easily make your own black glue by mixing a few drops of black food coloring into a bottle of glue.
I’ve also tried to add a generous amount of black acrylic paint to the glue instead of food coloring. However, I found it took forever to mix together, and the two separated if you left the glue to sit for a while. I much prefer black food coloring because it’s so much easier to mix and lasts for a long time. I’ve had mine for over a year and it still hasn’t separated out.

How to Make Black Glue Christmas Crafts
I’m going to show you, step-by-step, how to make a black glue Christmas tree craft. However, you can use this same process to make any kind of Christmas themed picture you want.
You can see more examples of different black glue art projects I’ve tried this holiday season below the tutorial.
1. Draw the Christmas Tree

You can either use a pencil to draw the picture first, or just freehand your tree with the bottle of school glue.
To make the tree shape, I started with a large triangle shape. I then added a black square at the bottom for the tree trunk. Finally, I made some squiggly lines which you can turn into tinsel or Christmas light shapes when you’re ready to paint.
While I prefer to use watercolor paper for this project, it isn’t essential. Since this craft is for younger children, any piece of white paper will work. However, if you’ve got older kids who will notice the difference in paper, then stick to the watercolor paper instead.
2. Let it Dry

You’ll find that when the glue dries, the lines appear much larger than when they were wet. Take this into account when you are applying your black lines.
I find that the easiest way to make the lines nice and thin, is to only open the lid of the glue halfway. I also try to make as many lines in one sweep as I can, because large glue dots will form at the beginning of every new line.
3. Paint the Picture

Grab your liquid watercolors and decorate your tree anyway you like. I decided to keep mine simple, with just a yellow star on top of the green tree. But if you want to add a little more interest to your Christmas tree art project, you can also paint some tinsel, christmas lights or baubles onto your tree.
4. Let it Dry Again

Once the paint is dry, you’re ready to hang it up, use it as a gift tag or turn it into a Christmas card.
