How to Make the Printable Christmas Measurement Activity

1. Download and print the free printable measurement cards

You’ll find these at the bottom of the post. Just click the large blue button to grab the free download.

2. Laminate the cards (optional)

To make this fun measurement activity more sturdy you can laminate each of the pages, or slip them into a dry erase pocket. This is a great way to ensure that they’ll survive your math center and you can use them with next year’s class too.

3. Cut out the cards

Each page has two different picture cards on it. Simply use a pair of scissors to cut them in half.

4. Gather your materials.

Now all you’ll need is some rulers and some pens and you’ll be ready to improve your measurement skills.

How to Play

1. Measure the line on the left.

There are two different ways to do this. It all depends on if you want to use formal (using standard units of measurement) or informal measuring (using a non-standard measuring tool)

For formal measuring, line a ruler up along the line, which is the same height as the picture. Or you can measure the picture itself.

For informal measuring, use small items (like mini erasers or buttons), and line them up along the line to the left.

2. Observe the number.

You will either need to read the number on the ruler, or count how many small items (e.g. buttons) that you’ve used.

For example, this Santa picture is 6 buttons high.

3. Write the number on the recording sheet.

On the recording sheet, write the height in cm, inches or number of items that each of the task cards is.

4. Number the Christmas objects from tallest to shortest.

Finally, compare the heights of all of the cards and rank them from tallest to shortest. With number 1 being the tallest and number 8 being the shortest.
