Materials Needed

  1. A plastic tub
  2. Artificial leaves
  3. Pine cones
  4. Sensory bin tools (cups, spoons, bowls etc)
  5. Water

How to Make a Fall Soup Sensory Bin

1. Fill a tub with water.

Fill your sensory table and get ready for some water play.

2. Add in some leaves and pine cones

I don’t have pine cones where I live, so I used a whole lot of gum nuts instead. Use whatever kind of local plant life you have where you live.

You can also include things like cinnamon sticks, essential oils or food coloring to your sensory bin.

3. Enjoy playing

Gather your sensory bin tools and enjoy playing. There are so many different ways you can play with these simple ingredients, you’ll be surprised how long your kids will be entertained.

Different Ways to Play

1. Scoop and pour

Use the cups and bowls to practice scooping up and pouring the water, nuts and leaves between the containers. This is a great way to help young children develop fine motor skills (the small muscles in their little hands and fingers).

If you try this with measuring cups, then you can also talk to your kids about how we measure liquids.

2. Sorting by type

Sort the leaves and nuts (or pine cones) into their respective groups. Sorting is a simple math concept that young kids need to learn before school.

3. Sorting by color

If you have leaves of various colors you can sort them into groups, depending on what color they are.

I got these artificial leaves at the local craft store. But if you are lucky enough to live somewhere that has real crunchy fall leaves, then head outside and collect those instead. Or better yet, get your kids to help you collect them.

4. Make patterns

Use the small items to make a pattern. We tried simple AB patterns using the leaves, but you can do whatever you like. It all depends on how good your kids are at pattern recognition.

5. Sort by size

Sort your leaves, pine cones, or in our case gum nuts, into size order. Arrange the different materials from the biggest to the smallest. This is yet another of the many math concepts that your kids will learn with this simple sensory bin.

6. Counting

Count the nuts as you place them into plastic bowls. This is perfect for curious toddlers who are learning to count to 10, or preschoolers who are learning to count to 20.

This also teaches children one-to-one correspondence, which is yet another math skill that kids of all ages need to master.
