Fun Fizzy Bones Science Activity for Kids

Materials Needed

1. Skeleton mould
2. Bicarb Soda
3. Water
4. Vinegar
5. Pipettes or syringes
6. Cookie sheet
7. Small bowl

How to Make a Fizzy Bones Science Activity

1. Pour the bicarb soda into the skeleton mould.

How much soda you use will depend on the size of the mould that you have. If you don’t want to use too much bicarb, you can always fill each of the cup halfway. They’ll still hold their form, but they won’t be as thick.

If you don’t have a skeleton mould, but you have some Halloween themed cookie cutters, then you can always use those instead.

2. Add water to the soda.

You don’t need a lot of water, just enough to make the soda wet. 

I like to add my water after the soda has been placed in the moulds because I find it easier. If you prefer, you can always mix the water and soda in a seperate bowl first, and then place the wet soda into the moulds.

3. Freeze overnight.

Place the mould in the freezer and leave it overnight.

4. Tip the skeletons out onto a cookie sheet.

I like to use a tray or cookie sheet because it helps to keep all of the mess contained. So cleaning up afterwards is much easier.

5. Place some vinegar into a small bowl.

Vinegar is a mild acid, which is why this activity works. If you don’t have any enough vinegar on hand, you can also try lemon juice instead.

6. Use syringes to gather up the vinegar.

I usually use a pipette to do these sorts of activities. However I thought that using some old syringes would add a nice Halloween twist.

Using syringes to suck up the vinegar is still a fun way for kids to develop fine motor skills while they play.

7. Squirt the vinegar over the baking soda.

When the vinegar meets the baking soda the bones will bubble and fizz. Keep adding vinegar to your bones until no more bubbles arise from the chemical reaction.

8. Enjoy playing.

Kids of all ages will love watching the bones fizz and melt away. You’ll love watching their reaction as they play.
