The Rainbow Fish Book by Marcus Pfister is always in our book basket when we’re exploring an ocean theme in class. It’s a wonderful story where the rainbow fish (the main character) learns how to be a good friend to the little blue fish, with the help of the wise octopus. Being a good friend is a great lesson that all of us need to learn to be a part of this world.

Different Ways to Play with the Free Rainbow Fish Printable

I’ve used free rainbow fish printables in a number of different ways. Of course you can make so many different kinds of craft ideas. But I’ve also used it to make a DIY peg board, play dough mat and a portable sticky wall activity.

Craft ideas

Use this free template to make a rainbow fish art project. Or maybe even 2 or 3. This is an easy craft that kids of all ages will love making.

Idea 1. Print the rainbow fish printable onto some colored construction paper. Then glue different colored tissue paper onto the template to make the beautiful scales.

You can also use pieces of foil to make some shiny scales in this collage picture, or go over your picture in glitter glue to make glittering scales instead.

Idea 2. Use the free rainbow fish printable as a base for classic painting, or as your go to for rainbow fish coloring pages.

DIY Rainbow Fish Peg Board

I had a blast turning the free rainbow fish template into a color matching and posting activity. This was a great way for young learners (2 year olds and up) to develop color recognition and fine motor skills while they play.

Playdough Mat

Print the rainbow fish template onto some colorful paper and laminate it. Now it can be a simple playdough mat. Gather together different colors of playdough (or even just plain blue play dough) and turn them into fish scales or just the overall fish shape.. You can also use different items such as a googly eye, glass pebbles and seashells to decorate your rainbow fish playdough mat.

Sticky Wall Activity

Rainbow fish. Sticky Wall kids activity using rainbow rice and this free printable.

Turn your fun rainbow fish craft into a sticky wall activity. You can do this in two different ways, depending on how old your children are.

Idea 1. Attach your rainbow fish templates to the wall and cover them in contact paper. Then let your young children decorate the wall how they want. Doing activities on a vertical surface like this is a fun way to help toddlers and preschoolers develop upper body strength while they play.

Idea 2. After making your beautiful rainbow fish, laminate the picture and cover it in contact paper (sticky side up). Now you children can decorate their fish scales with pom poms, fun confetti, or anything else you can think of.

We tried using rainbow rice for our rainbow fish. It was a huge mess, I do not recommend using rainbow rice for sticky wall activities.

I like doing small scale sticky wall’s like this, because they’re really easy to take with you when you’re traveling.
