Adult supervision is required for all activities at all times. Some of the links provided in this blog are affiliate links. I will be paid a commission if you use this link to make a purchase.

  1. Construction paper (White, yellow and blue)
  2. Black Marker
  3. Scissors
  4. Glue

1. Tear the yellow paper into strips.

I used yellow for this art project, but you can use any color you like. For example, orange handprints would be perfect if your kids are a fan of the Finding Nemo movie.

Tear or cut a sheet of colored paper into strips. This is a great way to help young kids develop their fine motor skills while they play.

2. Glue the strips onto the white paper

Spread glue over the yellow strips and paste them onto a sheet of white paper. Leaving enogh space between the yellow so that the white stripes can show too.

Leave the glue to dry before moving onto the next step.

3. Trace around your child’s hand.

Place your child’s hand over the striped paper and trace around their palm and fingers with a black marker.

4. Draw the stripes on your fish handprints.

Use the black marker to outline the stripes made by the yellow and white paper. This step is optional, I just love the effect it has, and if you’re making a clownfish this will make it look more accurate.

5. Draw the face.

Use your marker to draw a fish’s eye and mouth on one side of your fish. While I didn’t do it this time, you can also add more details to your fish, such as a pectoral fin.

6. Cut out the handprint.

Use a pair of scissors to cut out the hand prints. If you are doing this craft with young children, they might find this step too tricky and an adult will need to help.

7. Glue the fish onto the background paper.

Spread glue over the back of the handprint and glue it onto a blue background.

You can also add in some extra details, like drawing bubbles or seaweed around the fish.

8. Turn it into a card.

You can also turn this fish into a card for Valentine’s, mother’s or father’s day. Simply add the words “Will You O-Fish-Ally Be Mine” to turn it into a cute keepsake.
