Materials Needed

  1. A roll of butcher’s paper.
  2. A black marker.
  3. Paint
  4. Painters tape or small rocks

How to Make Life Size Self Portraits

Step 1. Set out a sheet of butcher paper on the floor and cut it to size.

2. Secure the corners.

Use painters tape or small rocks to secure the corners of the butcher paper. Without this the paper is likely to roll back up and make painting more difficult.

3. Draw the outline.

Get your child to lay down on top of the butcher paper and use a black marker to draw an outline around them.

This outline doesn’t have to be perfect. For example, my little girl had her hair loose and I decided to just draw around it and make her head look bigger than it actually is.

4. Paint clothes on the body.

Talk to your kids about what kind of clothes they want to paint. Then you can draw lines for where the clothes would be. For example, draw where the sleeves would be on a short sleeve shirt. Or draw a dress if your little girl wants to paint a dress on her portrait.

5. Paint the face.

We tried using the paint filled markers for this part of the project. They worked so well that the kids decided to use them to draw flowers, grass and a sun in the background of their pictures.

6. Cut it out and hang it up.

When the pictures are dry, you can cut them out. However this part is optional, you do not have to cut out the self portraits at all. You can just hang them up as is.

My little girl wanted hers cut out, where my son did not. So I used sticky tape to hang them up on their bedroom doors as they wanted.

Although I have to admit that for the first few days, walking past my little girl’s door always gave me a jump. Seeing a life sized child, in that spot, out of the corner of my eye wasn’t something I was used to.
