How to do Foil Painting

Step 1. Wrap a piece of aluminum foil around a chopping board

This step isn’t essential, but it does help to make the aluminum foil painting more sturdy. The flat surface also makes it easier to paint on and easier to move when your young children are finished painting. It’s also a great way to weigh down the piece of foil more heavily so that it doesn’t blow away in the wind.

2. Place dots of paint over the tin foil

One issue with foil art projects is that the paint flakes off very easily when it dries. This might be an issue if you plan to hang the foil paintings on your classroom wall. However, I do have an easy hack to fix this problem.

All you need to do is to mix some glue in with the paint. If you mix equal parts of glue and paint together, you can paint almost anything. I use this mixture when painting plastic, or other surfaces that tend to peel easily when painted.

3. Enjoy painting

Use paint brushes, fingers or a cotton bud to move the paint around the foil.

Kids of all ages are going to love seeing how the paint spreads over the shiny foil. You won’t see the paint stick the same way it does on white paper. Instead it spreads over the pieces of foil in new ways.

Notes

Paint doesn't stick to foil once it dries. It tends to flake off. To prevent this from happening, mix in some glue with the paint. A mixture of about 1/2 glue and 1/2 paint can be used to help paint any tricky surface. Such as foil or plastic bottles.
