  1. Push pins
  2. Green construction paper
  3. Washi tape or clear sticky tape
  4. Bulletin board

1. Make a green triangle.

Draw and cut out a large triangle and small rectangle from your green paper.

If you want to make a giant version of this activity to do with small groups in your class, then I recommend using some green wrapping paper, as it will be large enough to fit over a large board.

2. Attach it to the cork board.

I used green washi tape to stick the green paper onto my corkboard. However you can also use regular sticky tape or place a few of the push pins in each corner to hold the tree in place.

If you don’t have a corkboard on hand, you can always try this activity with an old cardboard box instead. You’ll just need to stuff some paper or something inside the box first, because the force of the pins will squash the box a bit.

3. Draw some Christmas lights.

Use a black marker to make some string lights that wrap around the tree. You can also use colored markers to draw on the lights and turn this into a color matching activity too.

4. Gather your push pins.

Place your push pins in a small container that is easy for the kids to manage.

Please make certain you supervise the children at all times. Push pins are sharp and small enough to swallow and you don’t want any accidents to happen.

5. Push a pin into the paper.

Pick up a pin and push it into the paper and corkboard.  You don’t need to follow the lights, you can place the pins wherever you like.

6. Repeat and enjoy.

Keep going until your kids are finished playing.

If they want to do this activity again and again, its easy to simply pull each of the pins out for them. They won’t mind if the Christmas tree already has a whole lot of holes in it.

1. Fine Motor Skills

This fun activity is a great way for young children to get some fine motor practice. (Fine motor muscles refer to the small muscles in the hands and fingers). This includes things like hand-eye coordination and pencil grip.

2. Color Recognition

Using push pins in different colors is a fun way to teach younger kids their colors. For some extra color fun, you can also use colored markers (the same colors as your push pins) to draw the lights on the string. Then the children will need to match the push pin to the matching colored light.
