Materials Needed

  • White Rice
  • Pink Rainbow Rice
  • Craft Flowers
  • Valentines colored pom poms
  • Sensory Bin tools, such as spoons, jugs and bowls

It’s so easy to make rainbow rice, and it’s not nearly as messy as you would think. This Rainbow rice recipe is taste safe so it’s suitable for babies and toddlers who like to taste everything.

The article also includes my number one hack for making sensory play (almost) mess-free. If you like the idea of having a 1 minutes clean up time, then you’ll love this hack.

How to make a Rainbow Rice Valentines Sensory Bin

Step 1: Get your two colors of rice and place them in a large container.

I used a piece of paper to use as a heart mold for the pink rice. It worked beautifully but was a bit tricky to hold in place while pouring the rice.

If you decide to try and make a heart mold, I recommend trying to keep it in place by using something to prop it up. Some heavy glasses should work if you place them strategically.

2: Decorate your heart with pom poms, flowers or whatever Valentines themed manipulatives you have.

3. Lay out some bowls and spoons, to practice scooping and pouring.

4. Have fun playing.

My kids loved this sensory bin.

Their favorite part of this activity was the small pink buckets that I found. They would fill them up, decorate the top with one of the flowers and give it to me as a present.

They didn’t care about the giant heart in the middle of the container, but that didn’t worry me. Because I had a lot of fun mixing the two colors together.
