Materials Needed

  1. Road Mats printable file
  2. Printer and paper
  3. Laminating machine and laminating sheets (optional)
  4. Small toy cars

Alphabet Road Mats

1. Download and print the alphabet roads.

There are 52 road letters in total. 26 upper case and 26 lower case letters. You can get your copy of this digital download by heading to the bottom of the post and clicking the large blue button.

If you want to make your road mats more sturdy, then I recommend laminating them or placing them in a dry erase pocket. Not only will this prolong the life of your printable, but it also means that you can use these mats with play dough and a wipe-off marker as well as your toy cars.

2. Look at the focus letter.

Letter identification is the first step in this activity. Use the focus letter to practice letter recognition and letter sounds with your class.

3. Read the sentence at the top of the mat.

Each of the colorful mats has an example of a transport vehicle that starts with the focus letter. For example, A is for Ambulance.

This is a great way to increase your childrens vocabulary as well as practice identifying beginning sounds in common transport vehicles.

4. Take a toy car and trace along the lines.

Each of the alphabet road letter mats has a series of numbered green circles and red stop signs. Start at the green 1 and trace the dotted lines with a small car until you reach the stop sign. Then continue with numbers 2 and 3.

Not only is this a fun way for young children to practice letter formation, it’s also a great way to develop fine motor skills.

Number Road Mats

1. Download and print the number road mats.

The numbers 1 – 20 are included in the printable bundle. A great addition to your math center.

2. Read how the number is written in the top left hand side of the mat.

This mat includes three ways in which a number can be represented. Written as a word, written as a numeral and concrete representation. Children will need to learn that all three represent the same number.

3. Use a small car to trace along the lines of each numeral.

Once again, you will find the green for go and red stop signs to follow for correct number formation.

4. Count how many cars are in the grid at the bottom of the mat.

This is the perfect way to practice not only counting but one-to-one correspondence. I like to include a set of buttons or transport themed mini erasers for children to pick up and place over each car in the grid as they count.
