1. Download and print the digital file found below.

The free printable contains the outlines of blank faces. There are several different skin tones to choose from, so you can easily adjust this activity to reflect the diversity represented in your class.

2. Laminate the mats, or place them in a dry erase pocket.

This is optional, but helps to make the mats more sturdy. Which is important when you’ve got dozens of children playing with them.

I’m a huge fan of using dry erase pockets instead of laminating worksheets. They work perfectly, help you save time, as well as cutting down on so much unnecessary waste.

3. Collect your materials and enjoy learning.

You can make your self potraits out of anything. If you’ve already got playdough and craft supplies in the cupboard, them you’re ready to go.

1. Playdough

Use playdough to create unique features on the self portrait.

Rolling, stretching and molding playdough is a wonderfully easy way to develop fine motor skills. With this homemade playdough recipe, you can also make as many different colors as you want.

2. Loose Parts

Use a variety of small items to create a face. The one in this picture has googly eyes, pom poms, buttons and strips of paper. But you can also try:

  • Nuts and bolts
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Mini erasers
  • Yarn

Picking up all of these small pieces helps children to strengthen their pincer grip and hand-eye coordination.
