Simple Spring Garden Sensory Bin for Toddlers

How do you feel when Spring finally arrives? I don’t know about you, but the warmer weather always makes me itch to go outside and get my hands dirty. I used to encourage my kids to comes with me until they started pulling out all of the new beautiful flowers while saying “weed”. Needless to say, that stopped pretty quickly (I’ll try again when they’re older). This Spring Garden Sensory Bin is a fantastic way to enjoy all the new growth that comes from this time of year, without killing your actual plants.

Sensory Play

What is Sensory Play? Why is it so important? There are a lot of benefits of sensory playbabiestoddlers, and preschool-aged children all learn different things from sensory activities.

One of the greatest benefits of sensory play is that it helps your childs brain to build connections in a meaningful way. We process and understand the world around us through our senses. The more we engage the senses, the more our kids understand what they are experiencing.

Spring Garden Sensory Bin

This sensory bin is half veggie patch, half flower garden.

I made the flower garden with green rainbow rice and some craft flowers. (Check out my taste-safe rainbow rice recipe to see how it’s done.) I also took out our toy bee so that it could buzz around the flowers.

It was a great opportunity to talk to my kids about bee safety. A lesson I should have done earlier considering that my baby girl had just stepped on a bee that weekend and got stung on her foot.

I then made the veggie patch using dried black beans and some craft carrots. I originally used the carrots for my Counting Carrots Sensory Bin, but the kids didn’t mind that they still had numbers written all over them.

Around the edges of the veggie patch, I placed some very hungry Easter Bunnies. My son was not impressed when they kept stealing his carrots.
