How to Make a Taste Safe Beach Sensory Bin

edible sand recipe

Step 1. Make your taste safe beach sensory sand.

Mix the flour and vegetable oil together in a large tub or bowl. Keep stirring until the mixture has reached a uniform consistency.

Towards the end, you may need to break apart the larger clump of beach sand with your hands.

I used vegetable oil for this activity and found that it gave the beach sand recipe the slightly yellow look that I wanted. However, if you want the yellow color to be more intense, you can always add a little bit of yellow oil based food coloring to your mixture.

2. Add in your seashells.

I got these beautiful shells at my local craft store. But you can also buy this mix of shells and starfish online or try your local Michaels stores. They’re perfect for any beach themed activity you want to do with your toddlers or preschoolers.

Don’t forget to add in some mini sandcastle molds

You can also add in all sorts of other loose parts to make this sensory experience your own. Small parts, such as sea glass, coral or a sand dollar, are a great way to add different textures to your bin. Not to forget that picking up all of those small items is a great way for little hands to strengthen fine motor skills.

3. Enjoy playing.

Of course, if you don’t need to have this sensory activity to be taste safe at all. If you have older children, you can always use regular sand out of the sandbox instead of making your own edible sand.

It all depends on how old your young children are and whether or not this is a concern for you.
