Halloween Crafts for Kids

Crafts for Halloween are a fun way to celebrate the spooky season with kids. Toddlers and preschoolers don’t need to be scared, instead, let them enjoy the silly side with these Halloween crafts for kids.

When I think about Halloween crafts for kids to try, this Flower Craft for Halloween was the one I got the most excited about. I love how they look like a handful of eyes staring at you. But even though they look awesome, they’re so simple to make.

Turn an old toilet roll into this Spooky Tree Halloween Craft for Kids. It’s surprisingly simple to make and looks great. However my favourite part is that you can place a tea light inside and it looks like the eyes are glowing.

Halloween activities for kids don’t have to be scary or difficult. If you teach a class of toddlers I recommend these Halloween Handprint Art ideas. Parents will love seeing their child’s little fingers turned into spiders and monsters.

Materials Needed

  1. Toilet Roll or a cardboard craft tube
  2. Scissors
  3. Paint
  4. Paper
  5. Grey Sharpie (optional)
  6. Googly (Wiggle) Eyes

How to make a Toilet Roll Stamp Spider

Step 1: Create your spider legs.

To do this, you’ll need to take your scissors and cut about ⅓ of the way down the toilet roll. Make 4 legs on each side of the tube, and spread them outwards.

Remove the remaining section of the cardboard tube so that when you bend the legs, the entire tube is the same level.

2. Draw a spiderweb onto a sheet of paper.

This is optional. I used a grey sharpie to raw the spiderwebs, it took 2 minutes and gave our pictures a bit more context.

It also provided a fantastic opportunity to talk to kids about spiders, how they make their webs and what they use their webs for.

3. Dunk your toilet roll spider into some paint and ensure that all eight legs an the ring around the center of the tube is covered in paint.

As you can see, I let my kids choose whichever color they wanted their spider to be. My spider was classic black, while theirs turned out multicolored.

4. Stamp your toilet roll spider onto the spiderweb drawing. Press each of the legs down to make sure the paint transfers correctly.

5. Remove the stamp and paint the middle circle left by the toilet roll. Again this is an optional step that I felt like doing.

You don’t have to worry about getting out paintbrushes too, remember that you can let your kids fingerpaint the center instead.

6. When your paint is dry, glue some googly eyes onto your spider.

What would I do differently next time?

To be honest, I wouldn’t do anything differently next time. I have to admit that my kids’ pictures did not look like spiders. That is because they wanted to stamp over and over again and therefore smudged any spider legs into one giant monster.

If you want nice, clean pictures then you have to limit the kids to only doing one clear stamp. This is sad because it limits the kids. They can’t make the picture they want and are forced to finish painting before they are ready.

I am a huge fan of process art, and I hope that you are too. Where the process of creating is more important than the end result.

Although this isn’t actually a process art activity (there is an end goal in mind), because this activity was FUN and gave us a chance to talk and learn about spiders it is definitely something that I would recommend to others.

Do you like the idea of process art? I have a whole list of 25 Process Art ideas for toddlers and preschoolers. Where the entire aim of the activity is to explore, create and have fun.
