Transport activities are always a hit with my toddlers and preschoolers. They just love learning about the amazing machines that move us around. But there’s more to transportation than just the vehicles, there are also signs and road rules to explore too. That’s why this easy Traffic Light Silhouette Art is a wonderful activity to do with the kids in your classroom.

How to Make Traffic Light Silhouette Art

Step 1. Cut a sheet of white A4 paper in half, lengthways.

2. Draw three circles on the paper.

I traced around a medium sized cup that I had on hand. But of course, you can also use a compass drawing tool if you already have one.

3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 with your sheet of black paper.

4. Use a pair of scissors to cut the circles out.

5. Organize your collage materials.

I used red, green and yellow paper, cut into squares for this traffic light art. However, if you have more items to include, your toddlers and preschoolers will love it. Items such as pieces of ribbon or scrap fabric, sequins, foam shapes, and stickers, are just some ideas to get you inspired.

6. Glue the collage materials onto the circles of the white paper.

I marked each circle with a colored marker to act as a guide for the kids to follow. So that they knew the top circle in a real traffic light is red, then yellow and finally green at the bottom.

Of course, some kids completely ignore the guide and just do their own thing. Don’t correct them, it’s important to let them create their art however they want.

7. Finally, glue the black piece of paper on top of your white paper.

The black circles will create a clearly defined outline of the collage underneath.
