Sensory play is incredibly fun. Isn’t it great to know that it’s incredibly educational and beneficial to your kids too? These benefits include building neural pathways in the brain, critical thinking, and language development. However, there is so much more to it than that. Read Exploring the Benefits of Sensory Play to get a better understanding of why sensory play is really fantastic for your child’s development.

I do a lot of sensory play with my kids, my son is a fussy eater and sensory play is one strategy you can use to help build tolerance in fussy eaters. His favorite by far is our Taste-safe Rainbow Rice. I made it for him when his baby sister was born and it really helped us get through such a tough time. Recently we’ve also been enjoying play with Flower Soup, Shaving Cream Magic Sensory Bin, and our Rainbow Jello Sensory Bin and Scavenger Hunt.

How to make Watermelon Slime for Kids

You can either make your own slime or buy it. The Best Ideas for Kids has a wonderful recipe that will show you how to make it yourself. It’s really easy and with this recipe, you can adjust it to make any kind of slime you like.

I bought our slime from the shops. Since my son has a few sensory aversions I wanted to make sure he would play with it before I ventured into making my own.

I let my kids add the black beans themselves. I just took a handful out of our Insect Sensory Bin and put it on the table for them. They enjoyed pushing the beans into the slime but got a bit frustrated when they didn’t come out perfectly clean.

This was such a fun summer twist on a classic sensory play activity. Fortunately, my kids haven’t been introduced to the watermelon seed spitting contest yet. Otherwise, this could have turned into a very messy (although very funny) afternoon.

Update

I’m going to warn you now to use the black pom poms and not the dried beans. I foolishly forgot that beans aren’t reusable if they don’t stay dry. After I took our watermelon slime out again a few days later a nice little chemical reaction had happened and our slime was unusually sticky and smelled a bit funny. I didn’t think that slime would react with dried beans, but they did and I had to throw the whole lot out. Don’t make the same mistake I did. Or if you do, don’t try and keep it for another day.
