Weather Activities for Kids

Weather play ideas come in all shapes and sizes. Here are some of my favorite activities to do, from exploring the science of weather to developing fine motor skills. There’s something for everyone.

Water Cycle STEM for Kids – Learn how to set up an indoor water cycle demonstration. This is a simple science activity for kids that will teach them about evaporation, condensation and precipitation.

Rainbow Lightning – This process art activity is amazing. You’ll be able to see food coloring splinter and fracture over the page, just like lightning. But don’t be fooled, it’s so easy to do that even toddlers can join in on the fun.

Storm Cloud Threading – Thread some beads onto paper plate clouds, creating rain, or snow with each bead. This is a simple fine motor activity that will get kids learning while they have fun.

Thunderstorm Sensory Bin – This thunderstorm sensory bin is a fun and easy weather activity to teach toddlers and preschoolers about rain, clouds, lightning and thunder.

How to Prepare your Weather Playdough Mats

Step 1: Download and print the Weather Playdough Mats

2. Laminate each of the mats to make them reusable.

3. Set out each mat with different colors of playdough and playdough tools.

How to Play

1. Discuss the type of weather depicted on each of the mats. What are the different components shown? What type of clothes should you wear for this type of weather? Etc.

2. Roll the playdough into long snakes or balls.

3. Place the playdough along the lines or circles.

4. Enjoy learning.
