Winter Sensory Activities

Need some more sensory play ideas? These sensory bins are the perfect winter activities for kids.

This Polar Animals Sensory Bin is a wonderful opportunity to teach kids about the amazing animals that live in the north and south poles. Learn about how they keep warm and survive in such an extreme climate.

Winter Sensory Bottles – If, like me, you live somewhere where it never snows, this is one way to enjoy the winter season and still see all the swirling (albeit fake) snowflakes. Take a look at these 3 different winter-themed sensory bottles

Another fantastic winter play idea is the Iceberg Sensory Bin for Winter. The icebergs are made from gelatinized milk and therefore 100% taste safe. They wobble around and delight the kids as they melt. Since the icebergs do slowly melt in water, this is a great opportunity to talk to the kids about climate change and how global warming affects the polar ice caps and the animals that live there.

Materials Needed

  1. Cotton balls
  2. Blue and white pom poms
  3. Twigs
  4. Playdough
  5. A large tub

How to Make A Winter Forest Sensory Bin

Step 1: Roll your playdough into balls, about an inch in diameter.

I used brown playdough because I already had some in the cupboard. However, you can use whatever color you have on hand. Since you are going to cover the playdough, the color won’t matter too much.

2. Place several twigs into the playdough, to make mini trees.

The larger and longer your twigs, the more playdough you’ll need to help your trees stand up unassisted.

3. Place the trees randomly around the large tub.

4. Unroll several cotton balls and wrap them around the playdough, and spread them over the bottom of the tub.

You don’t have to unroll the balls, but I’m so glad that I did. My kids loved tearing the cotton apart and decorating the trees with it.

5. Sprinkle more cotton balls and pom poms throughout the tub, so that it looks like the forest floor is covered with snow.

6. Enjoy playing.
