How to make Handprint Fall Leaves

1. Paint your hand.
Use red, orange or yellow paint to cover your child’s entire hand. Of course, you can also use multiple colors in a single handprint or let your kids choose whatever color they like.

2. Press the hand against the paper.
Try to encourage your kids to press their hand firmly against the paper, without moving their fingers around.
But of course, if they can’t resist moving their fingers around, don’t worry about it. Their pictures will still be a lot of fun for them to make.

3. Let your picture dry before moving onto the next step.

4. Use a sharpie to draw the veins of the leaf.
I used an orange and red sharpie to draw veins on top of the dried handprint leaves. I tried a couple of different patterns. One where I drew a vein to the end of each finger, and one where I just did a single tall vein and small mini veins throughout the palm instead.
Let your kids do whatever they feel like and they’ll create a unique artwork that makes a great keepsake.
What You’re Learning
Creativity
Arts and crafts are a great way to use your imagination and then create something that represents that idea in the real world. This is important not only for artistic pursuits, like painting or music, but also for problem solving. Which is an essential life skill that everyone needs to develop.
Let your kids express their creativity by letting them draw what they like. They can try:
- Drawing a face onto their leaves.
- Using multiple colors to make rainbow leaves.
- Making multiple handprints on their paper to make an entire pile of fall leaves.

Science
This is the perfect opportunity to talk to your kids about why leaves change color in the Autumn. There are a lot of fun science facts to learn about this time of year.
