How to make a Fork Painted Hedgehog Craft

1. Download and print the hedgehog template.

This digital download is available as a free pdf, which you will find at the bottom of the post. Just click the blue button to grab your free copy.

2. Apply the paint

Dip the back of the fork into some brown paint, then drag the fork tines across the page. This will leave behind a striped pattern, which is perfect for mimicking hedgehog quills.

If you prefer, you can also use a regular paintbrush to apply the paint, then use a fork to drag through the wet paint and make the spiky patterns. This method may be easier for toddlers or preschoolers who have a shorter attention span, or tend to get discouraged when things take too long.

3. Let it dry

What You’re Learning

Creativity

Arts and crafts are a great way to use your imagination and then create something that represents that idea in the real world. This is important not only for artistic pursuits, like painting or music, but also for problem solving. Which is an essential life skill that everyone needs to develop.

Fine Motor Skills

Fine motor skills refer to the small muscles in the hand and fingers. Developing these skills are important in being able to write when the kids go to school, as well as being able to complete tasks independently. (For example, dressing and feeding themselves).

Holding a fork and using it to paint is going to help young kids develop:

  1. Tripod grip
  2. Hand-eye coordination
  3. Dexterity

Planning and Organization

Organizing the required materials beforehand, as well as planning out each step before you do it, is a great way for kids to strengthen their executive functioning skills.
