Materials Needed
You probably already have everything you need for this activity at home already. All you need is:
- Colored chalk
- Paper (white or black)
- A hammer
- A bowl of water (this is key)
How to Make a Hammer Painting
1. Break the chalk into small pieces – I found pieces about ¼ inch in length to work perfectly. If you find breaking the chalk with your fingers difficult, you can always use a knife to help you.
2. Soak the pieces in a bowl of water – This will make the chalk soft and easier to break apart when hammered.

3. Place the pieces of chalk on the piece of paper – Let the kids place the chalk one by one or all together, whatever they feel like doing.
You can do this activity using either black or white paper, I personally prefer using black paper because it helps the colors to really shine. But if all you have is white, then don’t fret, it’ll still be a lot of fun.

4. Use a hammer to smash the chalk into the paper – The chalk will spread over the paper, and the colors will mix a bit depending on how enthusiastically the kids hammer.

5. Let your picture dry – Now you have a fun artwork to hang on your fridge.
