1. Download and print the flag.

You can find the link to the free printable below. Just head to the bottom of the post and click the large blue button to get your copy.

There are both color and black and white versions of the flag for you to use.

2. Laminate the flags.

This is optional. I like to laminate the flags because it makes them more sturdy and reusable. That way I can pack this activity away and use it again for next year’s class too.

3. Paint the gum nuts.

I got my little girls to help me with this step. Use black, red and yellow paint to color the gum nuts.

If you can’t get your hands on gum nuts, don’t worry. You can use buttons, pom poms or any other type of manipulative you want for this activity.

4. Let them dry

Let the paint dry before setting up the final activity.

1. Match the colors.

Pick a colored gum nut and place it in the section of the flag with the matching color. For example, yellow gum nuts will go in the center of the flag.

Pick up and placing the gum nuts is also an easy way to get toddlers and preschoolers to work on their fine motor skills through play.

2. Coloring Page

You can also use the black and white version of the flag as a coloring page or as a color matching activity. There’s no limit to how you can use this printable.

3. Make Patterns

Use the gum nuts to practice pattern recognition with your kids. I started by creating a color pattern and then asking my son to add onto the end.

We kept it simple, exploring AABB and ABB patterns. But you can make the patterns as challenging as your kids need.

4. Make Shapes

Use the colored gum nuts to build shapes or pictures.

We tried basic shapes like triangles and squares. However this is a great way to get your kids to think outside the box and come up with something unique.
