How to Make an Aborigial Flag Handprint Art

There are two different ways to make this Aboriginal flag craft. Take a look and see which method you would prefer using when making handprint art ideas.

Method 1. Paint the hand directly

Step 1. Spread the paint onto the child’s hand directly.

The colours of the aboriginal flag are red, black and yellow. I started with the yellow circle in the center of the hand. I then painted the bottom half of the hand red, and finally ended with the top half of the hand black.

2. Press the hand down onto the paper firmly.

Try to keep your children’s fingers as still as possible. It can be hard for them to resist the urge to wiggle their little hands back and forwards. However, if they do, remember it’s all about having fun, it’s not about creating the clearest handprint.

This method is fantastic for toddlers and preschoolers who like to get messy, or those who need to explore the sensory side of their art project.

Just make sure that the first thing you do is to clean their little hands off when they’re finished. You don’t want any paint going somewhere difficult to clean.

Method 2. Trace and then paint

Step 1. Use a black marker to trace around the hand.

Showing kids how to trace their own hands is a great idea. After all, handprints are a fantastic first step to a whole range of amazing kids art ideas.

2. Paint a yellow circle in the center of the hand.

3. Paint the bottom half of the handprint red.

4. Paint the top half  of the handprint black.

This method is perfect for when you want an art idea that you can use for small groups. Especially if you want to use crayons instead of paint to decorate your handprint. That way the kids can make their own artwork independently, without the need for one on one teacher assistance.
