Flower Garden Sensory Bin for Kids

Learn how to make your own Flower Garden Sensory Bin for your kids. This is a fun activity that lets kids engage in imaginative play, by giving them their own garden to play with.

I’ve outlined both an indoor and an outdoor version of this sensory activity, so you can choose which one works best for you and your circumstances.

Adult supervision is required for all activities at all times. Some of the links provided in this blog are affiliate links. I will be paid a commission if you use this link to make a purchase.

As the weather warms up, now is the perfect time to try some of these Spring activities for kids. I don’t know about you, but there’s something about the change in seasons that gets my kids excited about learning. Or you can invest in the Spring Activity Pack, which is filled with educational ideas for young kids.

  1. A large plastic container
  2. Dried black beans or black rainbow rice
  3. Artificial flowers
  4. Wire cutters
  5. Pot
  6. Sensory Bin tools (Cups, spoons, bowl, etc)

If you prefer to watch the tutorial, instead of reading the step-by-step instructions, you can check out how to make this activity on YouTube instead.

1. Place the sensory bin filler in the large tub

I used a combination of dried black beans and black rainbow rice to fill this sensory bin.

If you don’t know how to make your own rainbow rice, you can always check out my taste-safe rainbow rice recipe to learn how.

2. Separate your fake flowers

Use a pair of wire cutters to separate your bunch of flowers into each individual stem. You’ll definitely need wire cutters for this step because scissors aren’t strong enough to cut through the wire.

Although, you may be lucky and find a bunch of flowers in the dollar store that are already separated.

3. Place the sensory toys in the garden bin

Place the flower pot, flowers and sensory bin tools inside the plastic tub.

4. Enjoy playing

Now your kids can have fun picking the flowers, planting them and playing with the rainbow rice.

This is also a great way to talk to your kids about different parts of a flower, the plant life cycle or even just introduce them to garden creatures (I prefer toy bugs to real ones for this idea)

Outdoor Option

If you want to take your sensory play outside, all you need to do is fill an old pot with dirt, then let your kids plant their fake flowers in the pot.

I did this when my kids were little and they just loved having their own gardens to play with.

It also saved me the headache of making sure they didn’t run around the entire yard, making sure they didn’t pick all of the real flowers.
