What You’re Learning
This is a super simple sensory bin, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not filled with a whole lot of fantastic learning opportunities.
1. Math
Measuring volume: Use different sized containers to measure volume. For example, how many small cups does it take to fill the large cup?
Sort by size: The bird seed contains a variety of seeds that are different sizes. Pick a few and arrange them from the smallest to the biggest.
Alternatively, you can also sort your different containers by size too.
Counting: Practice counting from one to ten or twenty. Count each spoonful of bird seed as you scoop and dump it into a new container.
2. Fine Motor Skills
All of that scooping and pouring is a great way to strengthen little hands.
Picking up small objects, such as individual bird seeds, helps young children to practice pincer grip.
Scooping and transferring the bird seed using tools, such as spoons or tongs, also helps to develop hand-eye coordination and dexterity.
3. Science
Learn a bit of biology by exploring birds and what they eat.
Discuss with your children what birds eat and how they find food. This play idea also provides a wonderful opportunity to answer any of the questions your kids may have about birds.
