Sensory Play

What is Sensory Play? Why is it so important? There are a lot of benefits of sensory playbabiestoddlers, and preschool-aged children all learn different things from sensory activities.

One of the greatest benefits of sensory play is that it helps your childs brain to build connections in a meaningful way. We process and understand the world around us through our senses. The more we engage the senses, the more our kids understand what they are experiencing.

Materials Needed

  1. Colored craft paper
  2. scissors
  3. plastic easter eggs
  4. fluffy craft chicks
  5. a large tub

How to Make a Birds Nest Sensory Bin

Step 1: Cut the colored paper into thin strips.

If you have a shredder handy, then use it. However, I found that cutting the paper with scissors was incredibly easy and took less than 5 minutes.

2: Scrunch the paper strips up in your hands, and then spread them over the bottom of your container.

3: Place some of the baby chicks into the Easter eggs, and close the eggs. Place these and some empty eggs and “hatched” chicks on top of the paper.

Helping the baby birds to hatch out of the plastic Easter Eggs ended up being a great fine motor activity. My son loved holding the eggs up and making them pop open. My baby daughter just loved placing the chicks in the out of the eggs, even if closing the eggs again proved to be a bit too difficult for her.

I even got to practice a bit of color matching while the two munchkins played. However, that was only because I was lucky enough to find baby chicks that were the same color as the eggs.
