How to Make Black Glue Rainbow Art

1. Make your black glue.

There are a couple of different ways to make your own black glue. You can either:

  1. Take a bottle of school glue and mix some black acrylic paint into it, or
  2. Take some white glue and mix black food coloring into it.

I’ve tried both methods and found that using acrylic paint was a bit hit and miss. They didn’t always mix together and ended up wasting materials.

However, using black food coloring has always worked for me. The only issue I had with food coloring was when I stored the bottle upside down for an extended period of time (as in, a few months). The food coloring would glug up the end and block the spout. If you do this method, just make certain you get a glue bottle that is stored with the spout facing upwards.

Of course, if this is too time consuming, you can easily just buy ready made black glue. Then you won’t have to worry about it not working properly or any of the other issues that I’ve had trouble with in the past.

2. Draw a rainbow onto your sheet of paper.

Use a pencil or pen to draw a rainbow onto your paper first. This will give young kids a template to follow in the next step.

3. Trace the lines with black glue.

Older kids will be able to do this step themselves, however toddlers and preschoolers may need some help. Their hands may get tired quickly from squeezing the bottle for a long time, or they won’t have enough fine motor control to follow the lines.

4. Wait for the glue to dry.

5. Paint your rainbow.

Use some liquid watercolors to paint the colors of the rainbow. This is the fun part of all black glue crafts because you get to see what your picture will look like.
