How to Make Black Glue Shape Art for Kids

Step 1: Make the black glue.

Mix a small amount of black acrylic paint into the clear glue and leave it to sit for a day. Leaving it to sit really helps the paint break up and integrate with the glue thoroughly.

The paint doesn’t affect how the glue works, and you can leave the bottle to sit on your shelf until the next black glue project you have.

2: Use the black glue to make shapes on the watercolor paper.

You only need a very thin line of glue. As you can see in the picture, when there is too much glue, it pools at the corners and distorts the shape.

This isn’t really an issue, after all the kids will still learn and still have fun doing this activity. This is a personal preference of mine, where I would prefer for the shapes to be neater to start off with.

3: When the glue is dry, (overnight is usually enough time to dry), use watercolor paint to color the inside of the shapes.

Why use black glue instead of a pen? Ink tends to bleed out once it gets wet, where the glue doesn’t. The black glue also has the benefit of not soaking up the color when it gets painted over. So the shapes will shine through no matter how many times the kids paint over them.
