How to Make a Rocket Craft for Kids

1. Paint a white base coat.

Kids shampoo bottle painted white.

Make sure that your bottle is clean before you start painting.

In a small bowl, mix white paint and craft glue. I used this mixture as a base coat for my own rocket, so that the pictures from the label didn’t show through the paint.

Mixing the glue in with the paint is optional. However it does help the glue to cling to the plastic more easily and to not flake off one the paint has dried. If you are ever doing any kids craft ideas that require painting on plastic, remember this one hack.

2. Paint the bottle as you like.

Plastic bottle painted blue and yellow.

I decided to make a blue rocket with yellow stripes. But this is a great way to let your kids be creative and come up with their own ideas.

3. Draw 2 fins on paper.

Red paper with a triangle drawn on it.

Once again, you can use whatever color paper you like. Draw a couple of triangles onto the paper using a black marker. Also include an extra small section besides your triangle, you will need this part to attach it to the bottle in the next step.

Since the bottom of the bottle I was using was slightly curved, I decided to trace around it so that my find would stick to the bottle nicely. If your bottle isn’t straight either, then I recommend that you do the same.

4. Cut out the fins and glue them to your space rocket.

Use a pair of scissors to cut out the fins, then fold them along the extra line that you made. Use the extra bit at the side of your fin to attach it to your homemade bottle rocket. I like using double sided tape for these sorts of projects because it doesn’t require any drying time, but regular glue works perfectly too.
