How to Make a Butterfly Paper Heart Craft

1. Draw a large circle on the red paper

This is the first step to make the butterfly’s wings. I traced around a paper plate to make my circle. But you can always use a compass drawing tool or draw a circle freehand instead.

2. Cut out the circle

Use a pair of scissors to cut out your circle.

3. Fold the circle into a concertina pattern

You’ll probably remember the concertina pattern from when you made paper fans as a kid. You’re going to fold a section of the paper forwards and then backwards on itself. This is a lot easier to understand if you watch the video and can see it in action.

4. Gather the paper in the middle and fold it in half

Once you’ve folded your entire circle, gather all of it in the middle. It will look a little like a number eight, with a circle on top, a circle on the bottom with your fingers in the middle.

Fold the paper in the middle, so that your two circles are now next to each other instead of one above and one below.

5. Use glue to attach the two sides of the circle together

I used double sided adhesive tape to glue the two sides together. I love using double sided tape or glue dots because I don’t have to wait for it to dry.If you are going to use a dab of glue instead, you’ll need to peg the two sides together using a clothes peg until the glue is dry.

6. Spread out the folds until it’s in a heart shape

Gently spread out the paper, without ripping your paper hearts. You’ll see how the red heart now looks just like butterfly wings.

7. Repeat with another red circle of the same size

Repeat steps 1 – 6 with another piece of red paper, you’re going to need two red hearts for this paper heart butterfly craft.

8. Glue the two hearts onto a sheet of paper

I used a light blue paper for the background of my butterfly craft, but you can use various colors if you prefer. Let your kids choose which color they would like, it’s a great way to let them be creative and make their butterflies unique.

9. Use a black marker to draw some antennae

Another alternative to try, would be to make the antennae out of a pipe cleaner instead. You can also use pipe cleaners to make the body of the butterfly. Although I didn’t try that for this art project, I think it would be easy enough to make a butterfly body and glue in between the two colorful wings.

10. Paint dots on the background

This final step is optional, but I loved how it turned out. Use paint and a cotton bud to make small dots all over the colored paper.

You could also use heart stickers or glitter glue to decorate your background however you like.
