Materials Needed
- Free butterfly template
- Printer and white paper
- Toilet roll
- Paint
- Scissors
- Craft glue or double sided adhesive tape
- Paintbrushes
How to Make a Butterfly Toilet Paper Roll Craft
1. Download and print the free printable templates
You can find the free pdf files for this template below. Just head to the bottom of the post and click the large blue button to get your copy.
If you print the templates on a thick card stock, you won’t even need an extra toilet paper roll, because the card will be thick enough to maintain its shape without the additional cardboard.
2. Paint the wings and body of the butterfly
Decorate your butterfly wings however you like. I had fun using acrylic paint and circle stamps to make mine. But of course you can also experiment with whatever craft supplies you have on hand.
For example, some fun ideas you can try include:
- Drawing designs with a black marker
- Washi tape
- Stamping with pom poms or cotton balls
- Stickers or craft gems
3. Cut out the pieces
Once the paint has dried, use a pair of scissors to cut out the individual pieces.
If you are doing this activity with young children, they may need help with this particular step. However, older children will be able to do it by themselves and it will even help them to strengthen their fine motor skills at the same time.
4. Glue the smaller wings on top of the large ones
Attach the smaller of the butterfly wing template to the center of the larger one. I used double sided adhesive tape (which I love because you don’t have to wait for it to dry), but glue dots or regular glue will work too.
5. Roll the rectangle around an empty toilet paper roll
Wrap, and glue the butterfly’s body around your cardboard tubes.
If you have used a piece of cardstock, you can just roll the cardstock into a cylinder. Because of the thickness of the card it will keep its shape without the need for a toilet roll.
6. Glue the butterfly body to the wings
Attach the back of the paper roll to the middle of the wings. Now your toilet paper roll butterfly craft is ready to hang on the wall or decorate your classroom.
