How to Make a Cardboard Roll Letter Match Puzzle

Step 1. Write the alphabet onto paper towel rolls or an old toilet roll.

I wrote lower case letters onto the tube. However you can choose to do upper case letters, different colors or even numbers for this activity instead.

If you don’t have enough toilet rolls for the whole class, you can also use a paper plate or an alphabet page instead. This simple puzzle also makes a great busy bag for quiet time at home.

2. Write the letters of the alphabet onto a sheet of dot stickers.

You can choose to do either uppercase letters or lowercase letters on your dot stickers. It all depends on what the learning objective you are trying to achieve is.

3. Peel off the dot stickers and place them directly over the matching alphabet letter on the cardboard roll.

Peeling stickers is a fun way to help young children strengthen fine motor skills. This is another reason why I love this fun activity. It covers a range of different skills.

4. Enjoy learning.

If you’re doing this as a small group activity and want to check the childrens work when they’re finished, then I recommend writing the alphabet in order on the cardboard rolls. Switching up the order of the letters on the stickers instead. That way, if the stickers are placed correctly, you’ll be able to see without needing to remove any of the stickers to see which letter is written underneath.

My kids had great fun doing this activity. They even ended up peeling the stickers off of the cardboard tube and back onto the sticker sheet so that they could do it again. Next time I’m going to remember to have extra sticker sheets ready for them.
