DIY Christmas Tree Peg Board (Fine Motor Activity for Kids)

Is your dining room strewn with all kinds of ornaments that your toddlers and preschoolers have taken off of your real Christmas trees? The good news is that you can easily create alternative Christmas trees for them to play with. With just a few simple materials you can make this DIY Christmas Tree Peg Board for your kids to play with.

Not only is this a fun activity for the holiday season, it’s also a great way to help young children to develop their fine motor skills. Then, when all the fun is over, you can pack it all away and save it for next year too.

  1. Cardboard cereal box
  2. White paper
  3. Paint
  4. Glue
  5. Pegs

I used the pegs from our pegboard set. However, you can also make your own out of cotton buds and paint very easily (Like I did with this rainbow fish peg board activity). This is perfect if you don’t have your own pegs or want to have specific colors for your activity.

1. Take an old cardboard box (I used a cereal box), and glue white paper to the top.

You can paint your box white instead. However I prefer to just glue paper on because that way I don’t have to wait for several coats of paint to dry first.

2. Paint or draw a Christmas tree onto the box.

Remember you can get the kids to help with this step. All you need to do is draw a triangle and let them color it in with crayons or whatever you have on hand.

Push pins, making holes in christmas tree.

3. Use a pair of scissors or a small screwdriver to make holes in the pegboard tree.

One way to make it easier, is to initially make the holes of this pegboard Christmas tree idea using a push pin. Then use the screwdriver to make the holes larger.  I like the screwdriver, because the holes look perfectly round. However you can also use pencils, pens or anything of that kind to make the holes bigger.

4. Use the pegs to post into the holes and decorate the tree.

When the pegs have been placed in the box it looks like your tree is now covered in Christmas decorations.

Another idea is to draw a curly line between all of the holes with a black marker. That way it looks like Christmas Lights when the pegs have been posted.

I don’t know about you, but I’m always looking for more Christmas activities to do with the kids this time of the year. Here are some more great ideas that can be used at home or in the classroom to develop fine motor skills. Your kids will love learning through play with these fun and easy activities.
