I used feathers, buttons, craft sticks, felt squares and more in both the primary colors and secondary colors. But use what you have on hand and what you think would interest your young children.

More ideas for objects you can use in your color wheel project include:

  1. stickers
  2. ribbon
  3. pipe cleaners
  4. pictures from old magazines.

3. Spread glue over the color you want to decorate

I got my kids to use a paintbrush to spread small amounts of school glue around. But if you want to, you can use a regular glue stick if you want another simple way to paste the different items down.

4. Stick the objects down.

Although this great project is intended to double as a color sorting and matching activity, this isn’t essential. When I did this picture with my little girl she decided that she wasn’t going to follow my suggestions and made a “rainbow picture” instead.

If this is the case for your art class, and you still want to help them recognise colors without overriding their creativity, then just focus on identifying the colors of the object as they pick them up instead. For example, you can ask questions like “Where is the blue button?” or “Why did you pick the red feather?”.

This is a fun way to learn about the spectrum of color while also encouraging language development.
