Materials Needed
- A large plastic tub
- Sand
- Toy construction vehicles
- Sticks
- Pebbles
- Sensory bin tools (cups, bowls, spoons, etc)
How to Make a Construction Truck Sensory Bin
1. Pour the sand into a large tub.
If you don’t have any sand, then you can use whatever sensory bin filler you already have on hand. Other options you can try include:
- Black beans
- Kinetic sand
- Mud
- Moon sand.
If you want a taste-safe option then check out this edible construction sensory bin idea. You can make the moon sand out of a few simple kitchen ingredients in under 10 minutes.
2. Place the sticks, pebbles and toy trucks in the tub.

Arrange the little trucks and other items on top of the sand.
Something else that I wish I had added was some little traffic signs or mini construction workers. It would have been a great way to talk about road rules while they engaged in imaginative play.
3. Enjoy playing

Now all you have to do is gather your sensory bin tools and have fun exploring this sensory activity.
Different Ways to Play
1. Pretend play.

Use the plastic toys to pretend that you’re on a construction site by digging and moving the sand around.
Dramatic play is a wonderful way for young learners to work on language development, social skills and more.
2. Sort by size.

Grab the stick and arrange them from tallest to shortest. This is a simple math activity that is important for young children to master.
3. Sort by color.

Sort and group the different pebbles by color. This is another math activity that can be learned with hands-on practice.
