How to Make a Fingerprint Heart Painting

1. Draw a heart onto the cardboard.

The cardboard from an old cereal box is perfect for this art project. As it’s roughly the same size as an A4 piece of paper.

You can make one big heart, or several smaller hearts for your picture. Do whatever you feel like.

2. Cut out the hearts and place them onto the white paper.

Use a pair of scissors to cut out the hearts. Practicing cutting is a great way to help young children develop fine motor skills. However if you are doing this fun craft with toddlers, they may need an adult to help them with this step.

Arrange the hearts over the top of your white paper. You can also use blu tack or sticky tape to help them stay in place during the activity.

3. Paint a base layer.

This step is optional. My kids wanted to paint a base layer first before doing any fingerpainting. This worked well for us because my son is impatient and this method was faster than doing only fingerprints.

4. Use fingerprints to decorate the layer.

Once your base layer is complete, pick a different color paint, dip your finger into it and make spots all over the page.

Or you could skip step 3, and just use fingerprints to color the entire page. Whichever method you choose will depend on what your kids are capable of and how they feel like creating that day.

Keep going until your picture is completely covered, or you are happy with the results.

5. Remove the cardboard while the paint is wet.

This is important. If you wait for the paint to dry before removing your cardboard, then the paint or cardboard will tear. Ruining your beautiful picture. However if you remove the cardboard while the paint is still wet. Then you don’t have to worry about your picture tearing.

6. Let your picture dry.
