  1. A large plastic bin
  2. A ball of yarn
  3. Pom pom balls in
  4. Artificial leaves
  5. Scissors
  6. Sensory bin tools (cups, bowls, spoons, etc)

1. Gather your materials

There’s no limit to what you can put in your sensory bin. You can pick whatever color yarn or pom poms that you want. It’s all about letting kids explore and play with different materials and using their imagination to find different ways to play.

2. Cut the ball of yarn into pieces

I find that the easiest way to do this is to just cut the wool ball in half, straight down the middle. If you don’t cut the yarn into pieces then you’ll end up with one big tangled mess that you won’t be able to play with again.

3. Fill the tub with yarn

Start by separating the yarn and placing it along the bottom of the tub.

I really like using yarn for sensory bins, not only because you can play with it in a few different ways, but you can also pack it away and use it again.

4. Place the leaves and pom poms on top

Sprinkle the rest of your pom poms and leaves over the top of the yarn.

1. Scoop and pour

Use different tools to transfer the different materials from one container to another. This is a great way for young children to develop their fine motor skills (the small muscles in their hands and fingers)

I had different tongs and tweezers for my kids to experiment with. It was a great opportunity for them to practice hand-eye coordination, as they moved a bunch of pom poms from the large bowl to smaller bowls.

2. Sort by size

I used a variety of different sizes and color pom poms in this sensory play idea. I did this intentionally because then the kids can sort the pom poms from the smallest to the biggest.

Sorting is an early math skill that young children need to develop before they head off to school, and this was an easy way to help them practice.

3. Sort by color

If you have younger children at home, who are still learning to sort by size, then try sorting by color instead. This is still a sorting activity and can be easier for very young kids since the difference in color may be more noticeable to them than a difference in size.

Having pom poms of different colors is essential for this idea, but it’s an easy way to help teach kids color recognition while they play.

4. Making letters

Older siblings can use a number of pom poms to make their own letters or numbers. This is a fun activity for literacy centers that focus on teaching kids letter recognition through play based learning.

5. Making shapes

Use the yarn to make a variety of 2D shapes. This is a great idea if your little ones are still learning the difference between circles and squares.

6. Making pictures

Use the different materials to make any kind of picture you like. Not only is this lots of fun, but it’s also a fun way to help kids use their imagination while they work on their fine motor practice.
