Materials Needed

  1. Leafless tree free printable
  2. Green paint
  3. Red paint
  4. Paintbrushes (optional)

How to Make a Fingerprint Apple Tree Picture

1. Download and print the leafless tree printable.

This free printable for kids can be used to make all sorts of different tree pictures. This is particularly useful if you are exploring the different seasons with your kids and want to explore how the leaves change throughout the year.

You can get your copy by clicking the blue button at the bottom of the post.

2. Paint the green leaves.

I used a paintbrush to create the green part of the tree. However, this step is another wonderful opportunity to use fingerprints. Or at the very least, finger painting.

3. Make your apples.

Dip your finger in red paint and dot it all over the green leaves. Encourage your children to simply dot their fingers, and not swipe them around. The urge to mix the colors may be too much to ask of toddlers. So if your kids do decide to fingerpaint with the red paint instead, let them. After all, the purpose of this idea is about the process of creating and not the final artwork.

You can make as many apples as you like or use this part of the art project to practice some counting. Ask your child to make 10 or 20 apples on their tree, counting each of them as they go.

4. Let your picture dry.

What You’re Learning

Creativity

Arts and crafts are a great way to use your imagination and then create something that represents that idea in the real world. This is important not only for artistic pursuits, like painting or music, but also for problem solving. Which is an essential life skill that everyone needs to develop.

Let your kids express their own unique ideas when they paint. They may want to:

  1. Paint different colored apples (like a rainbow apple tree)
  2. Paint apples that have fallen on the ground.
  3. Paint a person picking the apples.

Sensory

Finger painting is a wonderful sensory experience. This activity is particularly good at helping kids who don’t like to get messy, to explore that sensation aversion in a controlled way.

Science

Learn where apples come from. You can discuss different aspects of apples with your class, such as:

  1. Where do they come from?
  2. How do they get from the apple farm to your houses?
  3. What different foods can you make with apples? (e.g. apple pie)

Math

Count how many apples you have created. Even if you haven’t aimed for a certain set of apples, like 10 or 20. You can still count how many you have, even if it’s only 1 or 2.

Healthy Eating

Learning about which food is healthy and where that food comes from, is a great way to talk to your kids about nutrition and why it’s so important for their bodies. For more ideas, take a look at these 16 Healthy Eating Activities for Kids.
