- Hammers – if you are doing this activity with toddlers, try using wooden toys hammers instead of real ones.
How to Make Hammering Flowers Art
1. Collect your petals.
This art activity all started by exploring the garden. My kids loved being allowed to pick their own flowers (something I usually do not encourage) and putting them in a bowl.
I made sure that we had a variety of colors because I wanted to see what they looked like when they got smashed onto the page. If it was up to my kids, we’d only have purple daisies to create art with.
2. Place the petals onto the paper and hammer away.
I have to admit that it took a lot of hammering to get the colors onto the paper. I think that next time I’ll try watercolor paper and see if having a type of paper that is more absorptive makes a difference.
What I loved discovering was how the petals became a different color when smashed onto the paper. For example, the purple petals ended up looking more blue than purple.
