How to Make the I Love You To Pieces Valentine’s Craft
1. Download and print the I Love You To Pieces free printable template.

2. Tear your colored paper into small squares.
You can use both card stock or tissue paper for this easy craft. Tearing paper is a fantastic way for little hands to practice pincer grip and develop strength through play.
3. Glue the squares into the middle of the heart.
While I glued the pieces at random, my daughter decided to make a pattern with the different colors. This is a great example of how you can make use of your imagination to come up with completely different pictures, even if you use the same materials.
4. Let it dry.
The final picture now makes a thoughtful gift for someone special. Send it home for a beloved family member to treasure.

There are so many different ideas you can try with this Valentines day craft. One of the best ideas I’ve seen is to use old puzzle pieces instead of small pieces of paper. This is a fun way to decorate the heart shape that your kids will love.
The reason I like to use torn paper instead is:
- Tearing paper is a fantastic fine motor activity for kids of all ages to do in and of itself.
- I don’t have many lost puzzle pieces lying around.
Although you may decide to sacrifice an old puzzle and try the puzzle piece idea, you can also just make your own with pieces of construction paper and a simple puzzle piece template.
Making your own puzzle pieces is great for older children with more advanced scissor skills. However, toddlers and preschoolers may find cutting out puzzle piece shapes too tricky.
Fine Motor Skills
Cutting and tearing paper is a great way to help children of all ages develop fine motor skills. In fact, almost any craft doubles as a great fine motor activity for kids.
Developing fine motor skills is essential to help prepare kids, not only for writing in school. But also with so many essential skills that help children to be independent, such as dressing and feeding themselves.
