How to make an Ice Cream Sweep Activity

Step 1. Download and print the ice cream picture.

The ice cream printable comes as a free digital download for you to use. You’ll find the blue download button at the bottom of the page.

2. Place your ice cream picture inside of a box or tray with a lip.

An old cereal box is perfect for this activity because it’s usually large enough to fit an A4 piece of paper. All you need to do is cut one of the sides off, making sure to leave the border around the edges.

You can also use a tray with a lip, like a cookie sheet,  if you already have one handy.

3. Place a few sprinkled over the ice cream picture.

How many and what kind of sprinkles you choose is up to you. You don’t need too many, because you still want to be able to see the picture clearly.

If you don’t want to waste food, there are other options. You can also use small pom poms, cut up pieces of pipe cleaners, or rainbow rice as pretend sprinkles.

4. Grab your paintbrush and enjoy playing.

How to Play

This is a very simple activity. All you need to do is to use a paint brush to sweep the sprinkles to the middle of the picture, decorating your ice cream. You can also include a red pom pom and pretend like it’s the cherry on top of your ice cream cone.

What are you learning?

This activity is great for toddlers and preschoolers, who are still developing fine motor skills. Young children will get the opportunity to practice tripod grip or gross grasp (depending on their level of development), hand-eye coordination, hand strength, and more.
