I used a sheet of pink craft paper to print my little pig on. However you can still use a white background if you don’t have any pink paper on hand. Your kids might like to use crayons to make their own pig pink before moving onto the mud puddle part.

2. Place the pig into a large ziplock bag.

If you don’t want to use plastic bags, and are looking for a more sustainable art activity, then I have an alternative for you.

One idea, that I haven’t tried yet but would love to, would be to use real mud to paint with. I think that young children would have so much fun making their own muddy pigs using proper mud.

3. Place some brown paint and shaving cream into the ziplock bag.

It doesn’t matter where you place it, and might want to let the kids choose where they want it to go.

When I did this picture, I placed the paint and foam at the bottom of the paper. So that the pigs legs were muddy the most, and looked like it had walked through a muddy puddle.

4. Close the ziplock bag and start having fun.

When the bag is securely closed, you can now start to have fun. Smash, push or trace your fingers along the top of the plastic bag. It doesn’t matter how you do it, just have fun mixing and moving the cream and paint around.

This awesome muddy pig art is one of my favorite activities for babies and toddlers. First off, it’s just lots of fun. Your kids will love it. Secondly, not only is it a mess-free sensory activity, but it’s also a fantastic way for them to develop fine motor skills.

5. Open the bag and let the pig dry.

Be careful when removing your art prints. The shaving cream and paint makes the paper a little soggy and can tear fairly easily. If you’re not concerned about reusing your plastic bags, you can always use a pair of scissors to cut the side of the page open instead.

6. Cut out your pig.

You can cut out your pig either before putting it in the bag, or after it’s dried. Either way will work.

Once your cute pig has been cut out you can hang them on your classroom wall or glue it onto a colorful background.
